Benfica and adidas have extended one of European football’s longest-running commercial relationships through 2033, agreeing a new six-year partnership reportedly worth around €120 million.
The agreement is believed to be the largest sponsorship deal in Portuguese football history and will see adidas continue as Benfica’s official kit supplier while significantly expanding its presence within the club.
Most notably, adidas will acquire the naming rights to Benfica’s training and development centre, which will become the adidas Benfica Campus. The move transforms an established kit supplier relationship into a broader strategic partnership covering both the club’s present and its future talent development.
A €120 Million Record for Portuguese Football
Neither Benfica nor adidas officially disclosed the financial terms of the extension, but the agreement is reportedly valued at approximately €120 million across six years.
That would make the partnership worth an average of around €20 million per season, setting a new benchmark for sponsorship in Portuguese football.
The scale of the investment reflects Benfica’s position as one of Portugal’s biggest sporting institutions and a club with considerable international reach beyond its domestic market.
For Benfica, securing a six-year commitment also provides valuable long-term commercial certainty at a time when leading European clubs are increasingly looking to maximise the value of their most established sponsorship assets.
A Partnership Spanning Generations
Few kit partnerships in European football can match the longevity of the relationship between Benfica and adidas.
Adidas has continuously supplied Benfica’s kits since the 1997/98 season, meaning the latest extension will take the current uninterrupted relationship beyond 35 years. The sportswear brand had also previously worked with Benfica between 1983/84 and 1989/90.
Over that period, adidas has been associated with some of the most significant moments in Benfica’s recent history.
The partnership produced the shirts worn during the club’s 2004/05 centenary season, when Benfica returned to the top of Portuguese football, as well as the 2016/17 campaign, when the club secured a fourth consecutive league title for the first time in its history.
That continuity has allowed adidas to become deeply connected to Benfica’s visual identity, with several generations of supporters growing up with the Three Stripes appearing on the club’s shirts.
From Kit Supplier to Campus Naming Rights Partner
The most interesting aspect of the extension is that the partnership is moving beyond traditional sportswear rights.
As part of the new agreement, Benfica’s training and development centre will be renamed the adidas Benfica Campus.
The facility plays a central role in Benfica’s sporting strategy, serving as the home of the club’s first-team training operations and highly regarded youth development structure.
By attaching its brand to the Campus, adidas gains year-round visibility within an asset closely associated with Benfica’s future players and long-term sporting development.
It also gives the partnership a more permanent physical presence. Rather than relying exclusively on visibility generated through match shirts, adidas will become associated with the infrastructure where Benfica develops its next generation of talent.
Benfica's Academy Becomes a Commercial Asset
The naming rights agreement also illustrates how football clubs are increasingly commercialising assets beyond stadiums and matchday inventory.
Stadium naming rights have become established across international sport, but training grounds, academies and performance centres are increasingly becoming valuable sponsorship properties in their own right.
For Benfica, the Campus is particularly attractive because player development forms such an important part of the club’s sporting and business model.
Connecting adidas directly to that environment creates a natural link between the sportswear company’s football identity and Benfica’s reputation for developing talent.
Benfica President Rui Costa described the naming agreement as recognition of the Campus’ strategic importance to the club’s future.
“The naming of the adidas Benfica Campus further strengthens this connection and recognizes the strategic importance of a space that is fundamental to the Club’s present and future, where we develop athletes, nurture dreams and build the next generations of Benfica talent,” Costa said.
adidas Strengthens Its Position in European Football
The extension also reinforces adidas’ strategy of maintaining long-term relationships with some of European football’s most established clubs.
In an increasingly competitive sportswear market, elite football partnerships provide manufacturers with far more than kit sales. They offer global brand exposure, lifestyle opportunities, direct access to supporters and a platform for product launches and cultural collaborations.
Long-standing partnerships can be particularly valuable because the sportswear brand gradually becomes part of a club’s visual identity.
For adidas, extending Benfica through 2033 protects a relationship that already spans generations of players and supporters while adding a significant new commercial asset through the Campus naming rights.
More Than a Traditional Kit Deal
The Benfica agreement demonstrates how the role of technical partners in football continues to evolve.
Historically, relationships between clubs and sportswear manufacturers were largely centred around supplying match and training apparel. Today, the biggest partnerships increasingly incorporate retail, digital content, lifestyle products, international marketing and additional sponsorship inventory.
Benfica and adidas are now taking that development one step further by integrating naming rights into the agreement.
The result is a partnership that combines technical supply, brand visibility and infrastructure sponsorship within one long-term commercial relationship.
A New Chapter in One of Football's Longest Partnerships
The extension ensures that adidas will remain part of Benfica’s identity well into the next decade.
By 2033, the current uninterrupted partnership will have lasted 36 years, while the relationship between the two organisations will stretch back almost half a century when adidas’ earlier period with the club is included.
The reported €120 million valuation demonstrates the financial strength of the agreement, but the addition of the adidas Benfica Campus may ultimately be its most interesting element.
Rather than simply renewing a successful kit partnership, Benfica and adidas are expanding it into a broader commercial relationship that connects the brand not only with the team competing today, but also with the players and infrastructure expected to shape the club’s future.
