After more than a decade away from professional cycling, Rabobank has made a striking return as a co-sponsor of Visma-Lease a Bike. The Dutch bank, once synonymous with elite cycling, is now set to re-enter the peloton with its branding appearing on the team’s jerseys from July 1, just in time for the 2025 Tour de France. This move marks a significant moment in sports sponsorship, particularly given Rabobank’s tumultuous exit from the sport in 2012 amid a doping scandal.
Rabobank’s history in cycling stretches back to 1996 when it became a title sponsor of one of the most dominant teams in the sport. However, in 2012, the bank withdrew its support following a damning report by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), which revealed widespread doping practices within the team. At the time, Rabobank cited a lack of confidence in the sport’s ability to maintain fairness and integrity. The team rebranded to Blanco and later evolved into what is now Visma-Lease a Bike.
Over a decade later, Rabobank’s return signals renewed confidence in professional cycling. According to Stefaan Decraene, Chairman of Rabobank’s Managing Board, the decision stems from the sport’s transformation into one of the most rigorously monitored disciplines. "Cycling is now one of the most controlled sports in the world," Decraene stated, emphasizing that the bank now sees it as a valuable investment in both talent development and societal engagement.
The new sponsorship agreement spans three and a half years, ensuring stability for Visma-Lease a Bike as it competes at the highest level. Although financial details remain undisclosed, team CEO Richard Plugge has confirmed that this partnership will allow the team to continue competing with the likes of UAE Team Emirates and INEOS Grenadiers.
Rabobank’s involvement extends beyond just visibility on the men's and women’s teams’ kits. The bank will also contribute to the development squad and grassroots initiatives such as the Ready2Race program, aimed at introducing children to cycling in an accessible way. Additionally, the partnership ties into a broader sports sponsorship strategy, as Rabobank has also become a key backer of TeamNL, supporting Dutch athletes across various disciplines.
Belgian cycling star Wout van Aert has welcomed Rabobank’s return, calling it a nostalgic and meaningful development.
“I’ve been on a bike since I was eight, and Rabobank was everywhere in the sport back then,” Van Aert reflected. “Their return shows a belief in cycling’s progress and integrity. I’m proud to wear this brand on my jersey.”
Rabobank’s re-entry into professional cycling aligns with broader industry trends, where major corporations are once again seeing value in the sport. With Red Bull recently entering the peloton and discussions of potential Saudi investment reshaping the financial landscape of cycling, Rabobank’s move is both strategic and timely.
By backing Visma-Lease a Bike, Rabobank is not just resurrecting a historic sponsorship but is also making a bold statement about the evolution of cycling and its commitment to fostering new talent. The coming years will determine whether this partnership can redefine Rabobank’s legacy in the sport and contribute to cycling’s continued global growth.
